5 million extra for CERN research
On 20 February Minister Muyters paid a visit to CERN in Switzerland. He met the Flemish researchers who work on the construction of a new detection system on one of the particle accelerators. The Government of Flanders grants 5 million euro extra for this build.
CERN is a European organization that conducts fundamental research into elementary particles. CERN was founded in 1954. Belgium was one of the twelve founders and is still a member. Flanders finances the Flemish research groups involved in two specific projects, namely the CERN-CMS experiment and the CERN-ISOLDE facility. For the period 2008 - 2017, this financing comes to an amount of 40.5 million euros.
Minister Muyters is now granting 5 million euros extra for the Flemish research group within the CERN-CMS experiment. They are contributing to the construction of a new detection system at the largest particle accelerator at CERN. As a result, the particle accelerator will be able to collect ten times more data within a few years.
