From 17 to 20 October 2012, minister-president of Flanders Kris Peeters undertook an economic mission to Turkey. On 18 October, he took part in the programme of the economic mission led by Belgian Prince Philippe in Ankara, after which he headed a Flemish economic mission to Izmir on 19 and 20 October.

During this mission, several high-level political contacts took place in Ankara and Izmir. There were meetings with, among others, the President of Turkey, the Turkish Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, the ministers of Economy, Culture and Tourism, and the Secretary of State for Energy. In addition, the participants of the mission sought to strengthen the economic relations and the expansion of commercial contacts.

During the mission, the minister-president paid a visit to Kavaklidere, the most important wine producer in Turkey which chose Antwerp as its distribution centre for Western Europe, and to Deceuninck, world leader in the design and production of energy-efficient PVC-systems for the building industry.

Besides their political contacts, the Flemish companies enjoyed a very interesting and balanced programme, with multiple B2B programmes, high-level contacts, and several seminars, with particular attention being paid to the port and logistics sector in Izmir.
