Flanders shares media-expertise with Ukraine
From Monday 22 June until Thursday 25 June, a Ukrainian delegation visits Flanders to get acquainted with our media environment. Ukraine seeks further integration with European standards and wishes to reform its media environment in that sense. The programme, which is organized by the Council of Europe in collaboration with the Flanders Department of Foreign Affairs, is meant to be a source of inspiration.
The 13-member delegation consists of representatives of the national broadcasting service, members of Parliament, civil society and representatives of the government. They will visit the public broadcasting service (VRT), the Flemish Parliament, the Flemish Media Regulator (VRM) and the media division of the Digital Research Centre, iMinds. The Global Forum for Media Development (FMD), the Flemish Association of Journalists (VVJ) and the Flemish Council of Journalism, will also receive the delegation, while the Flanders Department of Foreign Affairs organizes different meetings with representatives of the European institutions.
The Government of Flanders supports the EU policy on Ukraine and welcomes the commitment of the Ukrainian Government to its reform-path. By means of this programme, the Government of Flanders wishes to strengthen these reforms, convinced that a continuous evolution towards a more open and democratic society is the best guarantee for a prosperous and stable Ukraine. The reform of the Ukrainian media environment, with all necessary guarantees on freedom of media, therefor provides a crucial contribution.
The visit is part of the Joint Programme of the EU and the Council of Europe on strengthening the information society in Ukraine.
