As a neighbouring country, France is of course an important target country for Flemish foreign policy. We attach great importance to presentations of our heritage and the Flemish cultural sector. Flemish universities have a long tradition of cooperation with their French counterparts. Also, from an economic point of view, France is one of the most important Flemish trading partners. In the immediate border area (the Hauts-de-France region), we actively support cross-border cooperation, tackling established problems in the areas of mobility, town planning or welfare. It is also in Flanders’ interest to follow the political developments of this important Member State of the European Union and permanent member of the Security Council closely. It is therefore logical that Flanders is strongly committed to France through the General Representation of the Government of Flanders, several Flemish economic representatives and strong cultural, economic and political contacts.
