The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is a specialized agency of the United Nations, with headquarters in Rome. IFAD was one of the major outcomes of the 1974 World Food Conference. The organisation invests in rural people, empowering them to increase their food security, improve the nutrition of their families and increase their incomes. IFAD helps them build resilience, expand their businesses and take charge of their own development.
Since 1978, IFAD has provided US$18.5 billion in grants and low-interest loans to projects that have reached about 464 million people.
In 2014, Flanders signed a contribution agreement to the IFAD trustfund The Adaptation for Smallholder Agriculture Programme.
