Minister-president meets Myanmar minister of transport

  • November 9, 2012

On 8 November, Mr Nuyan Htung Aung, Minister of Transport in Myanmar, met with Flemish minister-president Peeters. The Myanmar Minister was paying a visit of several days to Flanders at the invitation of the minister-president, in order to better understand Flanders' best practices in waterway management and strategic infrastructure.

Minister Nuyan Htung AungĀ and minister-president Peeters met earlier this year in March during Mr Peeters mission to Myanmar. The Myanmar Minister of Transport illustrated his country's ambitions in terms of port development, transport infrastructure and logistics. Following this meeting, minister Nuyan Htung Aung decided to visit several examples of infrastructure in Flanders.

With this invitation, minister-president Peeters continues his support to the democratization process in Myanmar. Flanders wishes to strengthen its ties with the people of Myanmar.

Flanders aims to strengthen the economic relations, and to establish commercial contacts. This was also the main theme of the minister-president's mission with a Flemish economic delegation to Myanmar in March 2012. This mission was coordinated by Flanders Investment & Trade and supported by the Flemish Department of Foreign Affairs.

"With its knowledge in the field of transport and infrastructure, Flanders can assist Myanmar in its short and long term challenges. This will include efforts to strengthen the economic relations and to establish commercial contacts", concluded Flemish minister-president Peeters.
