Mission to West Africa results in collaboration ports of Antwerp and San Pedro

  • September 5, 2016

On 2 September, the Port of Antwerp and the Port of San Pedro in Ivory Coast signed a cooperation agreement,  allowing the construction of a logistics platform to start and hence further expand the Ivorian port.

The cooperation was sealed during Minister Ben Weyts’ mission to Guinea and Ivory Coast. Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) and Flanders International Technical Agency (FITA), which organized the mission, chose Sub-Saharan Africa as a destination. The region has seen enormous economic growth in the last decade. There is potential for port development and high demand for (modernizing) transport infrastructure. In addition to the Flemish ports, some 55 Flemish companies active in transport, logistics and the agro-industry took part in the mission.

Minister Weyts: "Flanders is an open export economy. We owe our prosperity to our trade relations with the rest of the world. Sub-Saharan Africa offers many opportunities for our companies, but we need to go and find them."
