During a telephone conversation with the Iranian ambassador Hussein Dehgani, Minister-president Jan Jambon,  expressed his deep concern about the fate of professor Ahmadreza Djalali. He spoke out in the strongest terms against the execution of the death penalty for professor Djalali and urged a solution.

“In addition, I have written to Prime Minister De Croo, to European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell and to Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with the explicit request to advocate the non-execution of the death penalty and the release of Professor Djalali."

This was stated on 13 May by the Minister-president during the Foreign Policy Committee in the Flemish Parliament after the Iranian authorities announced the execution date for the Iranian-Swedish professor earlier this month.

Professor Djalali worked as a visiting professor at the VUB in Brussels. In 2016, he was arrested in Tehran and sentenced to death on charges of espionage. The Flemish Parliament and the Minister-president have taken action on several occasions to prevent the execution of the death penalty.
