On 27 June Freya Moonen was announced laureate of the Flemish essay contest for the 70th anniversary of the Council of Europe. The 18-year-old convinced the jury – including General Representative Dries Willems – with her essay “A Climate of lawlessness”.
In her essay she pleads for the right to a livable world as a fundamental human right and calls for the Council of Europe to play a pioneering role: "It is up to the Council of Europe to create the right conditions to pursue an ambitious climate policy that serves the interests of nature and therefore of people, and not those of money and business. (...) In this light, all people should have the official right to inherit a healthy world from their predecessors, otherwise, all their other rights will be compromised."
The winner of the contest was announced during the congress celebrating the 25th birthday of the European Committee of the Regions and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.
