On 24 September, Leuven was proclaimed winner of the ‘European Capital of Innovation Awards’. This prize was awarded by the European Commission and rewards cities that focus on innovation to improve their residents’ quality of life. The municipality will receive €1,000,000 funded under Horizon 2020, the EU research and innovation programme.
The projects ‘Leuven 2030’ and ‘MindGate’ among others convinced the jury of the willingness of Leuven to build on a sustainable future. The city does this in cooperation with residents, institutions, companies and organizations.
Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, said:
“Leuven is a mission-driven city that excels in innovative governance models. It offers its people an opportunity to get involved in critical decision-making processes. But it’s an honour to recognise the initiatives of all six winners. Their vibrant innovation ecosystems are an inspiration to all European cities.” (Source: European Commission)
Mohamed Ridouani, the Mayor of Leuven, said:
“I am honoured and thankful for this award, which is a symbol of hope for a better common future, especially in these challenging times. Innovation for the better and for all is Leuven’s motto. Collaboration and empathetic leadership, translated systematically into an engaging governance model, is our way of getting it done.” (Source: European Commission)
Leuven competed with five other finalists, among which Valencia, Vienna and Helsingborg and takes over from Nantes, the previous winner.
