Partnerships in food security more important than ever
On 16th October, #WorldFoodDay has been celebrated worldwide. World Food Day is an initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to promote food security and tackle global hunger. On this day of action, the Government of Flanders shows its long-standing commitment to continue working for the food and nutrition security of its partner countries Malawi, South Africa, and Mozambique.
With the support of Flanders, the UN organization FAO started a new project earlier this month on optimizing agricultural production in Kasungu and Mzimba (Malawi). In cooperation with the Malawi government, FAO has trained 61,000 farmers in Malawi in post-harvest seed handling, storage & financial management.
Climate change is also having an increasing impact on food security in Southern Africa. Shortening the growing season, decreasing soil fertility, extreme weather conditions, etc. increase food scarcity and malnutrition. Flanders, together with the international community, supports its partner countries financially and technically so that they can defend themselves against the effects of climate change. The cooperation focuses mainly on Southern Africa, more specifically in Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa.
