Project: South-Africa - Flanders Climate Change Adaptation Research and Training partnership: building the adaptation knowledge and capacity base Beneficiary: African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI)  Amount: 2 198 505 euro Duration: 2020 Strengthening the capacity of South African society in the field of climate adaptation by training young people, especially from disadvantaged groups, at university level. The project provides 19 research grants for Masters students, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.

Project: Assessing social capabilities for new technologies, innovation and job creation Beneficiary: International Labour Organisation Amount: 77.745 euros Duration: 7 months (2019-2020)   The overall objective of this project is to improve effectiveness of the design and implementation of national innovation, productive transformation and job-creation strategies. This will be achieved by promoting knowledge and providing evidence on the role of a society’s innovation capabilities in strategies to transform economies for more and better jobs.

Project: "Economics and Governance of Water Security in Africa" - recommendations for water management in Cape Town Beneficiary: OECD Amount: € 80.000 Duration: 2019  The project is part of the OECD program "Governance and economics of water security in Africa". A policy dialogue with stakeholders from public, private and non-profit sectors in Cape Town is be started . This policy dialogue, supervised by OECD and the framework outlined in "Principles on Water Governance ", should lead to recommendations to make water management more future-proof. 

Project: First Aid Initiative - FAI II for southern Africa: consolidation, activation and capitalisation Beneficiary: Red Cross Flanders Amount: 1.000.000 euro Duration: 2018  With this initiative, Red Cross Flanders wants to contribute to solving the regional challenges in developing countries in the field of first aid. In 2013, Red Cross Flanders and the Government of Flanders set up a large-scale study in ten countries in Southern Africa. The study revealed a number of shortcomings.

Project: 'Increasing resilience and reducing vulnerabilities of local communities to the effects of climate change: promoting Ecosystem Based Adaption (EbA)' in South Africa Beneficiary: UN Environment - South Africa Country Office  Budget: 1.000.000 euro  Duration: 2018-2020 With the project, UN Environment (UN environmental agency) wants to support the government of South Africa to implement the overarching implementation plan for Ecosystem Based Adapation (EbA). Project: 'DEA Adaptive Capacity Facility' Beneficiary: Departement Environmental Affairs (DEA) Budget: 3.999.942 euro  Duration: 2018-2023 The project is coordinated by the South African ‘Departement Environmental Affairs’ (DEA). The department is responsible for the national response to climate change and the transition to green economy. The project focuses on strengthening the capacity for implementing climate adaptation, developing partnerships, setting up pilot projects and gathering and sharing knowledge.

Project: support to entrepreneurs in the South by making experts available Beneficiary: Ex-Change Duration: 2011-2016 Budget: 3.000.000 Ex-Change gives support to entrepreneurs in the South by making experts available to them. During short expertise assignments they provide assistance to SMEs in the South. Within the framework of the cooperation with the partner countries Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa, the reinforcement of local enterprises, and especially SMEs, is focused on as well. Many small enterprises in the South invest in their own region and create jobs.

Partner: Belgian Red Cross - Flanders Duration: 2013-2014 Budget: 147.840 euro The Belgian Red Cross - Flanders intends to strengthen the first aid activities of 10 national committees in southern Africa (Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe) via the International Red Cross. In order to bring this to a successful end, however, the idea is to carry out a baseline study first. For this purpose, the needs, legislative frameworks, policy plans and ongoing activities of each of the different countries will be recorded.

Partner: United Nations System Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN) Duration: 2012-2014 Budget: 516.500 euro In 2012, the Government of Flanders decided to help support the United Nations System Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN). Nutrition and food security (MDG 1) take centre stage in Flemish development cooperation and feature in the cooperation with the partner countries Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa. Hunger and poverty continue to pose serious problems in several African countries.

Duration: 2011 Budget: 150.000 euros Child abuse still occurs far too often around the world. The World Health Organisation (WHO) puts this theme high on the agenda of national governments worldwide. By doing so, it wants to raise awareness and increase the governments’ capacity to tackle this problem. Duration and budget In 2011, the Government of Flanders donated 150,000 euros towards the implementation of this project. Problem definition Worldwide, over 150 million girls and 73 million boys, aged under 18, are victim of sexual violence.

Project: The Sustainable Enterprise Development Facility for Job Creation in South Africa  Partner: International Labour Organisation (ILO) Budget: 3.305.000 euro  Duration: 1.01.2014 –31.12.2016 (extended till 31.06.2017) The development objective of the proposed Sustainable Enterprise Development Facility (SEDF) for South Africa is to create decent jobs for men and women in three provinces through entrepreneurship promotion and development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in sectors and value chains with employment potential.

Project: Job Creation through SME Development – a knowledge sharing project Partner: International Labour Organisation Duration: 01.01.2015 – 31.12.2017 Budget: 600.000 euro South Africa has a high unemployment rate: approximately 25% of the active population do not have a job. Especially young men and women and people with disabilities are unable to find work. Therefore, the generation of prosperity by promoting decent work is one of the policy priorities of the South African government.

Partner: LifeCo Unltd South Africa Grant: 2.398.970 euro Duration: October 2016 - October 2019 LifeCo UnLtd South Africa is working hard to support, create and enhance social entrepreneurship. LifeCo itself is also a social enterprise which uses business principles for social impact to realise a more inclusive society. Flanders supports LifeCo to enhance the social enterprise ecosystem and to allow the businesses to grow and become more sustainable.

Project: Support of the IDC Social Enterprise Programme Partner: Industrial Development Corporation Periode: April 2017 – March 2022 Budget: 3.000.000 euro The programme of the Industrial Development Corporation promotes social entrepreneurship in South Africa. By fostering the creation of companies with a clear social or environmental purpose, they integrate the most vulnerable groups into the economy. The programme focuses on the allocation of funding to social entrepreneurs who wish to develop a proven business model.

Partner: Government of South Africa - National Treasury with support of the Bertha Centre of the Universiteit of Cape Town Grant: 1.250.041 euro Duration: start in 2017 (3,5 years) The National Treasury of South Africa joins forces with the Bertha Centre of the University of Cape Town to test a new financing model for public contracts. In outcomes-based contracts the government no longer pays for the implementation of activities but only for the actual impact in the field, like for instance the Social Impact Bond.

Project: Participation and development of capabilities of civil society in realising socio-economic rights in South Africa Partner: Foundation for Human Rights Duration: 30.11.2012 – 29.11.2015 (extended till 31.12.2016) Budget: 1.285.000 euro By supporting this programme, Flanders wants to back the South African civil society up in its continued fight against growing socio-economic inequality in South Africa, since not only the government, but civil society as well has an important role to play in this context. Project: Building an ecosystem for Social and Environmental Entrepreneurship in South Africa Partner: SEED, hosted by Adelphi Research Duration: 1.01.2016 – 31.12.2018 Budget: 1.000.000 euro This project further supports the development of the SEED programme in South Africa. It is aimed at the development of social and environment-friendly entrepreneurship to stimulate the creation of sustainable development for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups and subsequently contribute to a green and sustainable economy. This is the second phase of the SEED project.

Project: Monitoring of parliamentary committees Partner: Parliamentary Monitoring Group Duration: 8.11.2012 – 7.11.2017 Budget: 200.000 euro With the support of the Parliamentary Monitoring Group, Flanders wants to help monitor the government policy on employment and agriculture and promote the participation of civil society around these themes in the relevant government policies. In this way attention is devoted to good governance in South Africa and the accountability towards citizens is increased. The Parliament of the Republic of South Africa consists of 52 parliamentary committees.

Project: Building the Eco-system for Social Entrepreneurship and Enterprise in South Africa to Catalyse Socio-economic Growth and Promote Job Creation Partner: Gordon Institute of Business Science, University of Pretoria Budget: 702.000 euro Duration: 01.01.2015 – 31.12.2017 The project wants to help promote social entrepreneurship by disseminating the principles of social entrepreneurship, training existing and starting social entrepreneurs and informing policy makers through research.
