Project: Agriculture Sector Wide Approach (ASWAp) in Malawi Beneficiary: Multi Donor Trust Fund (MDTF) supervised by the World Bank Duration: 2017 - 2022 Budget: 5.500,000 euros In its policy paper, Flanders explicitly opts for an effective agricultural policy and the right to food security in Malawi.

Project: Building Markets for Prosperity (BM4P) Beneficiary: Agricultural Commodity Exchange for Africa (ACE) Duration: 2020 - 2024 Amount: 1.500.000 euros ACE operates as a trade facilitator bringing together sellers, warehouse managers, banks and buyers to create structure and order in the agricultural market, which is predominantly in the informal economy. A context in which small-scale farmers are easily exploited. The project builds on the previous project "Strengthening Farmer Organisations and Rural Structured Trade Mechanisms in Malawi" carried out by ACE and WFP (2014).

Project: Improving the functioning of agricultural extension services, agricultural markets and agricultural cooperatives in Malawi Beneficiary:  International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) Duration: 2020 - 2023 Amount: 999.841 euro The project follows on from IFPRI's previous project financed by Flanders 'Assessing and enhancing the capacity, performance and impact of the pluralistic agricultural extension system in Malawi' (2016).

Project: Scaling up Radio and ICTs in Enhancing Extension Delivery II (SRIEED II) Beneficiary: Farm Radio Trust Amount: 1.695.866 euros Duration: 2020 - 2025 The objective of the project is to increase access and coverage of agricultural extension services for small-scale farmers through the use of radio and other communication tools.

Project: Flexible Multi-Partner Mechanism for Accelerated Impact Fund (FMM) Beneficiary: FAO  Amount: 3 000 000 euro Duration: 2020 By anticipating to innovative ideas and pilot projects in the countries where FAO works, the fund can be a catalyst for sustainable development. The FMM makes it possible for the FAO to deploy resources where they are most needed and have the greatest impact.

The Country Strategy Paper (CSP) 2019 – 2023 is the result of a joint consultation process between the Governments of Malawi and Flanders. In line with the previous strategy, the efforts will be on improving the agricultural sector, with a specific focus on extension services, market-oriented farming and sustainable land management. Extra attention goes towards ensuring equal opportunities for women and youth, and to support the ongoing decentralization process within the agricultural sector.

Project: Agriculture Sector Wide Approach (ASWAp) in Malawi Beneficiary: Multi Donor Trust Fund Duration: 2017-2018 Amount: 5.000.000 euro Together with several donors, the agricultural sector in Malawi  will be supported through the Agriculture Sector Wide Approach (ASWAp). The Support Project (ASWAp-SP) provides technical and financial support to the Ministry of Agriculture for the implementation of this ASWAp. Funding is provided through the Multi-Donor Trust Fund and is supervised by the World Bank.

Project: the participation of smallholder farmers in decision-making processes regarding agricultural policy and in the planning of agricultural services Beneficiary: Farmer Union of Malawi (FUM) Duration: 2013-2014 Budget: 200.000 euro The Government of Flanders decided to make a contribution to the Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) for the project "Integrating and Strengthening Capacity of Farmers into District Stakeholder Panels".

Project: One UN Window for the Right to Food in Malawi Partner: One UN Fund (managed by United Nations Development Programme) Grant: 1.250.000 euros Duration: 2014-2019 Flanders’ support to the Right to Food Window strengthens the role of non-state actors in policy implementation and overcoming policy barriers to the achievement of the right to food in Malawi (in terms of adequate availability, accessibility and adequacy of food).

Project: Identifying and enhancing the capacity, performances and effects of the pluralist agricultural extension system in Malawi Beneficiary: International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) Grant:  450,000 euros Duration: August 2016 - July 2019 On 8 July 2016, the Government of Flanders decided to allocate a grant of €450,000 to the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Malawi. IFPRI will use these funds in the coming three years to assist the Malawi Ministry of Agriculture in the development of a coordinated agricultural extension policy.

Project: introducing scientific and technical knowhow on aquaculture, or aquafarming, in Mozambique Beneficiary: Ghent university, Can-Tho University (Vietnam), Instituto Nacional de Investigação Pesqueira (Mozambique) Duration: 2010-2012 Budget: 98.005 euro Aquaculture is the process where aquatic organisms, such as fish and shellfish, are bred in ponds and basins to be sold on the market later. Aquaculture is still a very young technique in Mozambique, and the production process still needs a lot of improving.

Project: strengthening the impact of the investments on food security and sustainable growth in the agricultural sector Duration: 2012 Budget: 5.300.000 euro beneficiary: Multi Donor Trust Fund (MDTF) In mutual agreement with the donor community, Malawi is taking steps towards a form of sectorial budget support within the agricultural sector. This so called ASWAp is not operational yet, but in anticipation, the ASWAp-Support Programme has already been started up. The financing of this ASWAp-SP goes through a Multi Donor Trust Fund (MDTF) which is managed by the World Bank.

Project:  improving the access and reach of agricultural extension services for smallholder farmers Beneficiary: Farm Radio Trust Duration: 2014-2019 Budget: 1.045.000 euro The objective of the programme ‘Scaling-up Radio and ICTs in Enhancing Extension Delivery’ (SRIEED) is to improve the access and reach of agricultural extension services for smallholder farmers. For a long time already radio has been internationally acknowledged as an important instrument for agricultural extension.

Project: ‘Strengthening Farmer Organisations and Rural Structured Trade Mechanisms in Malawi’ Beneficiary: World Food Programme Duration: 2014-2018 Budget: 2.999.140,62€ The World Food Programme (WFP) and the Agricultural Commodity Exchange for Africa (ACE) join forces to implement this project. In 2009 the WFP launched the Purchase for Progress (P4P) programme to help smallholder farmers and their organisations gain access to the WFP market by linking WFP’s demand for basic food to the supply of smallholder farmers.

Partner: United Nations System Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN) Duration: 2012-2014 Budget: 516.500 euro In 2012, the Government of Flanders decided to help support the United Nations System Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN). Nutrition and food security (MDG 1) take centre stage in Flemish development cooperation and feature in the cooperation with the partner countries Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa. Hunger and poverty continue to pose serious problems in several African countries.

Duration: 2012-2014 Budget: 750.000 euro With this pilot project, Agribusiness Systems International (ASI) wants to implement, within the Department of Agricultural Extension Services (DAES), an existing system which disseminates market information by SMS. Duration and budget In 2012, the Government of Flanders decided to contribute to this innovative project, the pilot phase of which will be concluded in 2014. An amount of 750,000 euros was earmarked. Problem definition The agricultural sector is essential for food production in Malawi.

Duration: 2013-2015 Budget: 650.000 euro In 2009, the Government of Flanders already contributed to this organisation in the framework of a programme about capacity building among agricultural extension workers. Duration and budget This supplementary contribution amounts to 650,000 euros. The project will run from 2013 to 2015. Problem definition The agricultural sector is essential for food production in Malawi.

Duration: 2013-2015 Budget: 600.000 euro The Government of Flanders decided to allocate a contribution to the Natural Resources College (NRC) in Malawi. This training institute was already a partner of Flemish development cooperation within the framework of the programme for capacity building among agricultural extension workers. Duration and budget A contribution of 600,000 euros is charged to the 2013 budget. The project will start in the spring of 2013 and will last three years. Problem definition NRC is a public institution.

Duration: 2013-2015 Budget: 400.000 The Government of Flanders decided to allocate a new contribution to the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Malawi. This organisation has been one of the partners of Flemish development cooperation since 2009. Duration and budget A contribution of 400,000 euros is charged to the 2013 budget. The programme will start in the spring of 2013 and will last three years. Problem definition Deforestation is a huge problem in Malawi.

Duration: 2010-2013 Budget: 2.000.000 euro The support to the Department of Agricultural Extension Services (DAES) runs in parallel with the programme that is aimed at building the capacity of agricultural extension workers. Duration and budget The Government of Flanders invests 2 million euros in the extension of the material used by the Malawi Department of Agricultural Extension Services. This project started in 2010 and ends in 2013. Problem definition It is the duty of DAES to provide good and accurate agricultural information to farmers in Malawi.
