Grant to International Red Cross Flanders for reducing the impact of climate change in Southern Africa through Disaster Risk Reduction, 2018
Beneficiary: Red Cross-Flanders Amount: 2.500.000 euro Period: 2018 - 2020 Mozambique and Malawi are one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change due to extreme droughts, flooding and storms,... Climate change has a strong impact on the quality of peoples’ lives and the socio-economic conditions of the population are under pressure. International Red Cross-Flanders will focus on strengthening local Red Cross and Red Crescent sections in Malawi and Mozambique. Red Cross wil cooperate directly with local institutions.

Project: Coordinaton of the humanitarian consortium COSACA in Mozambique Beneficiary: Oxfam Solidariteit Budget: 478.793,16 euro Duration: 2018 – 2019 COSACA consists of the international aid organizations Oxfam, CARE International, Save the Children and Concern Worldwide. Through joint and coordinated action, COSACA has been working to increase capacity for disaster preparedness, response, and coordination. The emergency and humanitarian consortium wants to develop a new coordination structure.

Project: 'DEA Adaptive Capacity Facility' Beneficiary: Departement Environmental Affairs (DEA) Budget: 3.999.942 euro Duration: 2018-2023 The project is coordinated by the South African ‘Departement Environmental Affairs’ (DEA). The department is responsible for the national response to climate change and the transition to green economy. The project focuses on strengthening the capacity for implementing climate adaptation, developing partnerships, setting up pilot projects and gathering and sharing knowledge.

Grant to World Health Organization (WHO) for improving public health systems through climate resilience in Mozambique, 2018
Beneficiary: World Health Organization (WHO) Budget: 2.000.000 euros Duration: 2018 - 2021 The disease burden in Mozambique is characterized by a large proportion of climate-sensitive diseases. Malaria (6.2 million cases in 2016) and HIV / AIDS (13.2% prevalence in 2015) make up more than half of the mortality in Mozambique. Recurrent epidemics of climate-sensitive diseases (such as cholera, measles, dengue fever, chikungunya, West Nile and yellow fever) put pressure on the already over-health system.

FAO project 'strengthening integrated adaptation planning and implementation in small-scale farming systems in Southern Africa'
Duration: 4 years Budget: 3.500.000 The Government of Flanders focuses on structural measures and works closely with the United Nations Organization for Agriculture and Food (FAO). From 2016 till 2019, FAO will assist Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia to increase the climate resilience and food security of local farmers. Lessons learned from this program will be brought to the FAO global level.

Grant for emergency aid refugees of Mosul 2016
Project: Emergency aid for the refugees of Mosul, Iraq) Beneficiary: UNHCR Amount: 350.000 euro Duration: november 2016 The Government of Flanders approved a grant of 350,000 euros to UNHCR for the refugees from Mosul. Mosul is the third largest city in Iraq and located just across the border of the Kurdish Autonomous Region in Iraq. Since 2014, Mosul is controlled by Islamic State (IS). The Kurdish population but also a significant Christian minority in the city were largely persecuted and expelled.

Project: allocation of an independent expert public finance to the Ministry of Health (MISAU) Beneficiary: BTC (Belgian Development Agency) Amount: 694,950 euros Duration: 2017 - 2020 Since 2013, Flanders finances an expert public finance to support the ministry of Health and to coordinate the GTAF working group. The GTAF is the forum to investigate and discuss the Public Finance Management of the Ministry of Health (MISAU / DAF). The GTAF is responsible for following up financial management and for the dialogue between the donors and the ministry.

Project: Programme to improve sexual and reproductive health in adolescents and women with a focus on enhanced acces to contraception, HIV and STD prevention Partner: Doctors with Africa (CUAMM) Budget: 2.000.000 euros Duration: 2017-2020 Doctors with Africa (CUAMM) has been working in Mozambique since 1978 and has a good reputation among various partners. With this programme, the NGO aims to improve the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and women in Mozambique.

Project: Identifying and enhancing the capacity, performances and effects of the pluralist agricultural extension system in Malawi Beneficiary: International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) Grant: 450,000 euros Duration: August 2016 - July 2019 On 8 July 2016, the Government of Flanders decided to allocate a grant of €450,000 to the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Malawi. IFPRI will use these funds in the coming three years to assist the Malawi Ministry of Agriculture in the development of a coordinated agricultural extension policy.

Project: the development of better health care on the basis of evidence-based medicine (EBM) Beneficiary: Instituto Nacional de Saúde Mozambique (INS), the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITG) Duration: 2014-2017 Budget: 1.201.91 euro This budget is for Phase II. For Phase I, which ran from 2013 to February 2015, a budget of EUR 926,805 had already been appropriated, of which EUR 689,755 was intended for INS and EUR 237,050 for ITG. Through this aid the Government of Flanders wants to further the development of better health care on the basis of evidence-based medicine (EBM).

Project: introducing scientific and technical knowhow on aquaculture, or aquafarming, in Mozambique Beneficiary: Ghent university, Can-Tho University (Vietnam), Instituto Nacional de Investigação Pesqueira (Mozambique) Duration: 2010-2012 Budget: 98.005 euro Aquaculture is the process where aquatic organisms, such as fish and shellfish, are bred in ponds and basins to be sold on the market later. Aquaculture is still a very young technique in Mozambique, and the production process still needs a lot of improving.

Project: Structural support for Humanitarian aid in Malawi Beneficiary: Malawi Humanitarian Emergency Response Fund Amount: 479.000 euro Duration: 2016 - 2018 The Government has awarded a grant of 479,000 euros to the Malawi Humanitarian Emergency Response Fund for the period 2016-2018. This fund, administered by the UN, ensures that funds are available at the onset of a humanitarian crisis. Flanders is a co-founder of the fund and was the first donor in 2012.

During short expertise assignments they provide assistance to SMEs in the South. Within the framework of the cooperation with the partner countries Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa, the reinforcement of local enterprises, and especially SMEs, is focused on as well. Many small enterprises in the South invest in their own region and create jobs.
