Project: Refugee camp Gawilan (Kurdish Iraq)  Beneficiary: Rode Kruis Vlaanderen (Red Cross) Amount: 200.000 euro Duration: april 2016  In the refugee camp Gawilan in the autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq, near Erbil, live about 6,500 refugees from Syria.  Minister-president Bourgeois makes 200.000 euros available to the Red Cross for the direct support ("cash transfers") of 967 vulnerable families. The Flemish aid is part of a larger project of the International Red Cross, accounting for 4.2 million euros.

Project: Emergency aid  cholera in Haiti   Beneficiary:  Rode Kruis Vlaanderen Amount: 100.000 euro Duration: October 2016  On October 4, 2016 the south-west of Haiti was struck by Hurricane Matthew.

Partner: Belgian Red Cross - Flanders Duration: 2010-2012 Budget: 500.000 euros Flanders supports the implementation of the Malawi health policy, but also wants to strengthen the activities of NGOs in the health sector. Malawi’s short and long term challenges have reached such great volume that this double approach is necessary. Since 2003, the Malawi Red Cross Society has been active in Kasungu, where local hospital outreach centres were built with the support of the Dutch Red Cross.

Project: The Sustainable Enterprise Development Facility for Job Creation in South Africa  Partner: International Labour Organisation (ILO) Budget: 3.305.000 euro  Duration: 1.01.2014 –31.12.2016 (extended till 31.06.2017) The development objective of the proposed Sustainable Enterprise Development Facility (SEDF) for South Africa is to create decent jobs for men and women in three provinces through entrepreneurship promotion and development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in sectors and value chains with employment potential.

Partner: International Labour Organisation (ILO) Duration: 2009-2011 Budget: 1.142.650 euro (151.325 euros from the Flanders Department of Work and Social Economy) The International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) 'Decent Work' country programmes make an inventory of a specific country’s needs in the field of decent work. Based on this, ILO works, in cooperation with the government of the country in question, on a tailored global strategy. Over the past 10 years, the Mozambican economy has been characterized by a significant growth.

Project: Job Creation through SME Development – a knowledge sharing project Partner: International Labour Organisation Duration: 01.01.2015 – 31.12.2017 Budget: 600.000 euro South Africa has a high unemployment rate: approximately 25% of the active population do not have a job. Especially young men and women and people with disabilities are unable to find work. Therefore, the generation of prosperity by promoting decent work is one of the policy priorities of the South African government.

Partner: LifeCo Unltd South Africa Grant: 2.398.970 euro Duration: October 2016 - October 2019 LifeCo UnLtd South Africa is working hard to support, create and enhance social entrepreneurship. LifeCo itself is also a social enterprise which uses business principles for social impact to realise a more inclusive society. Flanders supports LifeCo to enhance the social enterprise ecosystem and to allow the businesses to grow and become more sustainable.

Project: Support of the IDC Social Enterprise Programme Partner: Industrial Development Corporation Periode: April 2017 – March 2022 Budget: 3.000.000 euro The programme of the Industrial Development Corporation promotes social entrepreneurship in South Africa. By fostering the creation of companies with a clear social or environmental purpose, they integrate the most vulnerable groups into the economy. The programme focuses on the allocation of funding to social entrepreneurs who wish to develop a proven business model.

Partner: Government of South Africa - National Treasury with support of the Bertha Centre of the Universiteit of Cape Town Grant: 1.250.041 euro Duration: start in 2017 (3,5 years) The National Treasury of South Africa joins forces with the Bertha Centre of the University of Cape Town to test a new financing model for public contracts. In outcomes-based contracts the government no longer pays for the implementation of activities but only for the actual impact in the field, like for instance the Social Impact Bond.

Project: Grant to the African Climate Change Fund Beneficiary: African climate Change fund period: 2017-2018 Amount: 2.000.000 euro According a study by Climate Policy Initiative in 2013-2014, only 3% of global climate funding went to Sub Saharan Africa. This contrasts with the finding that Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the lowest contribution to climate change, but with the highest vulnerability to climate change impacts. It is known that these countries find it more difficult to raise climate finance.

Project: Participation and development of capabilities of civil society in realising socio-economic rights in South Africa Partner: Foundation for Human Rights Duration: 30.11.2012 – 29.11.2015 (extended till 31.12.2016) Budget: 1.285.000 euro By supporting this programme, Flanders wants to back the South African civil society up in its continued fight against growing socio-economic inequality in South Africa, since not only the government, but civil society as well has an important role to play in this context. Project: Building an ecosystem for Social and Environmental Entrepreneurship in South Africa Partner: SEED, hosted by Adelphi Research Duration: 1.01.2016 – 31.12.2018 Budget: 1.000.000 euro This project further supports the development of the SEED programme in South Africa. It is aimed at the development of social and environment-friendly entrepreneurship to stimulate the creation of sustainable development for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups and subsequently contribute to a green and sustainable economy. This is the second phase of the SEED project.

Project: Monitoring of parliamentary committees Partner: Parliamentary Monitoring Group Duration: 8.11.2012 – 7.11.2017 Budget: 200.000 euro With the support of the Parliamentary Monitoring Group, Flanders wants to help monitor the government policy on employment and agriculture and promote the participation of civil society around these themes in the relevant government policies. In this way attention is devoted to good governance in South Africa and the accountability towards citizens is increased. The Parliament of the Republic of South Africa consists of 52 parliamentary committees.

Project: Building the Eco-system for Social Entrepreneurship and Enterprise in South Africa to Catalyse Socio-economic Growth and Promote Job Creation Partner: Gordon Institute of Business Science, University of Pretoria Budget: 702.000 euro Duration: 01.01.2015 – 31.12.2017 The project wants to help promote social entrepreneurship by disseminating the principles of social entrepreneurship, training existing and starting social entrepreneurs and informing policy makers through research. Three result areas were identified for realising a stronger eco-system for social entrepreneurship:

Project: Supporting Social and Environmental Entrepreneurship in South Africa, with a special focus on KwaZulu-Natal, Free State and Limpopo Province Partner: WCMC, which hosts the SEED Initiative (from 2013: Adelphi Research) Duration: 24.12.2012 – 23.08.2016 Budget: 771.047 euro The general objective of the project is to contribute to advancing a green and sustainable economy in South Africa, in particular KwaZulu-Natal, Free State and Limpopo, by enhancing social and environmental entrepreneurship, thereby strengthening local capacities, delivering green jobs, and promoting sustainable

Partner: The province KwaZulu-Natal’s department for housing Duration: 2007-2011 Budget: 297.188 euro The project’s goal is to decrease the impact of HIV/AIDS on orphans and on children infected with HIV/AIDS. The goal of the programme was to provide shelter and care for 120 orphans and children with high risk of an HIV/AIDS infection. Additionally, capacity building of the local community and service providers was also a goal.

Partner: KwaZulu-Natal provincial Department of Agriculture Duration: 2007-2012 Budget: 7.500.000 With this programme, the Government of Flanders wants to help improve the food security situation in the rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal. Food security is one of the top priorities of the South African government. However, at the same time it is one of the problems KwaZulu-Natal province is faced with as a result of the unequal access to food among households. One in three families do not have any access to food.

Project: Agribusiness Development Academy Programme in Limpopo Duration: 2007-2014 Budget: 7.500.000 This programme aims to provide support to new landowners and small to medium-sized entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector, in the context of the land reforms. For many years now, the land reform programme has been one of the most important large-scale initiatives of the South African Government. As a result of the land reform; small and medium-sized agricultural holdings have come into the hands of a group of new landowners.

Project: Public procurement and the social economy Partner: International Labour Organisation Duration: 2012-2013 Budget: 630.000 euro This programme wants to examine and test possibilities for using public procurement to stimulate the social economy in South Africa. Unemployment is a huge problem in South Africa. The unemployment rate among young people aged between 16 and 30 exceeds 40%.

Project: Public and private procurement and the Social Economy Begunstigde: International Labour Organisation Periode: 01.01.2014 – 31.12.2016 (extended till 31.06.2017) Budget: 1.735.926 euro This programme of the International Labour Organization (ILO) seeks to support the social economy in South Africa through targeted use of public procurement. Unemployment is a huge problem in South Africa. The unemployment rate among young people aged between 16 and 30 exceeds 40%.
