Grant for basic health care for orphans in Mozambique, Music for Life 2010
Duration: 2011 Budget: 300.000 In 2010, the theme of the Studio Brussel action was "laat een weeskind niet alleen" or "do not abandon the orphans". The Government of Flanders decided to contribute 300,000 euros to this action.

Grant for pilot early detection of tuberculosis in Mozambique, 2011
Duration: 2011-2012 Budget: 590.695 Through this pilot project, APOPO intends to accelerate the detection of tuberculosis in Mozambique and subsequently reduce the spread of this disease. Duration and budget This pilot project will last for one and a half years. If the project is evaluated positively, APOPO will launch a second phase which will consist of an increase in scale of the action. The grant amounts to 590,695 euros. Problem definition In comparison with other countries in sub-Saharan Africa and the rest of the world, Mozambique is faced with a high number of TB infections.

Grant for an update of the guidelines for cervical cancer detection, 2011
Duration: 2011 Budget: 309.102 Through this grant, the Government of Flanders wants to make sure that cervical cancer can be detected more rapidly in the partner countries of Flemish development cooperation. The grant will be used to update the guide. The Government of Flanders already lent its support to the creation of this guide. Duration and budget An amount of 309,102 euros was earmarked for this project. Problem definition Cervical cancer is one of the most treatable cancers.

Cooperation agreement between Flanders and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) 2012 - 2014
Duration: 2012-2014 Budget: 3.000.000 In 2011, the Government of Flanders decided to extend the aid to the World Food Programme (WFP) structurally. Since 2008, the Government of Flanders has already granted specific support to the country programmes of WFP in Malawi and Mozambique. The current aid covers the period from 2012 to 2014. Duration and budget The contribution for the period 2012 to 2014 amounts to three million euros. Problem definition Between 2007 and 2009, the number of undernourished people rose sharply, reaching the sad peak of more than one billion people in 2009.

Combating HIV/AIDS in southern Africa (UNAIDS)
Duration: 2011-2015 Budget: 3.000.000 With this cooperation Flanders wants to continue to commit itself structurally to combating HIV/AIDS in the region of southern Africa. Duration and budget Since 2006, the organisation receives structural support from the Government of Flanders. Flanders decided to renew the cooperation agreement with UNAIDS for the period 2011-2015. To this end, 3,000,000 euros have been earmarked. Problem definition Of the 33 million people who are infected worldwide, no less than 60% live in the southern African region.

Grant for African First Aid Materials in southern Africa, 2012
Duration: 2012-2014 Budget: 498.764 This project wants to help improve first aid in southern Africa by introducing the “African First Aid Materials” (AFAM). Duration and budget The project will run for three years. The grant for this project amounts to 498,764 euros. Problem definition Each year, tens of thousands of people in southern Africa get killed or wounded in accidents. The majority of the people do not have access to quick ambulance services or cannot afford them.

Grant to the World Food Programme for Purchase for Progress in Mozambique, 2009
Duration: 2009 Budget: 980.000 The United Nation’s World Food Programme (WFP) wants to eradicate hunger worldwide. WFP tries to accomplish this by creating country programmes. These programmes are designed to increase the production capacity of small farmers and merchants. Additionally, the augmentation of the merchants’ commercial reflex is also aimed at. Duration and budget For two years, Flanders supported the WFP’s Purchase for Progress (P4P) programme in Mozambique.

Grant for improving the supply chain and logistic services in the agro-industry in southern Africa, 2008
Duration: 2008-2012 Budget: 1.000.000 Since 2008, the Government of Flanders has supported the Supply Chain and Logistics Development Programme of the International Trade Centre (ITC). This programme is aimed at improving the supply chain and logistic services of 8 countries in southern Africa, including South Africa, Mozambique and Malawi. Duration and budget The programme started in 2008 and ended in June 2012. An amount of 1 million euros was earmarked. Problem definition Many southern African countries are faced with an important handicap.

Grant for child abuse prevention in South Africa and Malawi, 2011 (WHO)
Duration: 2011 Budget: 150.000 euros Child abuse still occurs far too often around the world. The World Health Organisation (WHO) puts this theme high on the agenda of national governments worldwide. By doing so, it wants to raise awareness and increase the governments’ capacity to tackle this problem. Duration and budget In 2011, the Government of Flanders donated 150,000 euros towards the implementation of this project. Problem definition Worldwide, over 150 million girls and 73 million boys, aged under 18, are victim of sexual violence.

Grant for reproductive health in southern Africa, 2009 (WHO)
Duration: 2009-2012 Budget: 3.498.000 euros With this project the World Health Organisation (WHO) wants to improve access to reproductive health systems for women in southern African countries. Duration and budget The Flemish Government supports the “WHO Initiative for Healthy Pregnancy in Southern Africa: Introducing the WHO antenatal care model in order to strengthen health systems and address violence during pregnancy” with a contribution amounting to 3,498,000 euros. This amount was earmarked on the 2009 budget and will support the programme for four years.

Grant to improve access to water, hygiene and sanitation in Malawi, 2010
Duration: 2010-2013 Budget: 2.000.000 With this global Wash programme, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) wants to guarantee access to water and sanitation as a basic public service. WaSH stands for water, sanitation and health. In addition, the organisation works to improve hygiene education. Needless to say, good hygiene increases the chances of survival of children and considerably reduces the risk of disease. Duration and budget The Government of Flanders earmarks 2 million euros for the WASH programme of UNICEF to improve sanitation and hygiene in Malawi.

Duration: 2006-2011 Budget: 2.000.000 The Government of Flanders wants to contribute to the creation and realisation of a national plan of action on HIV/AIDS for women and girls. Duration and budget The Government of Flanders has earmarked 2 million euros for this project. The project ran from 2006 until end 2011. Practical implementation The project “Enhancing community and national capacity to effectively address vulnerabilities of women and girls to HIV and AIDS” creates and realises a national plan of action for women and girls.

Grant to improve services regarding family planning in Malawi 2011
Duration: 2011-2013 Budget: 500.000 “Banja la Mtsogolo” (BLM) is a Malawian NGO working around sexual and reproductive health. With this contribution the Government of Flanders wants to help reduce the maternal mortality rate and support the combat against HIV/AIDS. Duration and budget Flanders earmarks 500,000 euros for the BLM programme which will run from 2011 to 2013. Problem definition Malawi is facing countless challenges in the field of health. The HIV/AIDS epidemic is growing, as a result of which more children are orphaned.

Grant to the dairy sector in Malawi 2010
Duration: 2010-2013 Budget: 500.000 Through this project Flanders aims to reinforce the dairy sector in the centre and north of Malawi. Duration and budget The project which is implemented by the Malawi Milk Producers Association will last 4 years. A total of 500,000 euros was earmarked for this. Problem definition The Malawi milk production is growing only gradually. Between 1980 and 2002, milk consumption rose by 40%. This is due to the population growth and the intensive food security campaigns that attach great importance to milk consumption.

Grant to build capacity among agricultural extension workers 2009
Duration: 2009-2013 Budget: 694.906 With this programme, the Government of Flanders supports the training of agricultural extension workers. These civil servants are crucial for the livestock farming policy of the Malawian Government. This programme runs parallel with the programme to strengthen the Department of Agricultural Extension Services (DAES). Duration and budget An amount of 694,906 euros was earmarked for the five partners.

Grant for food security and food situation in Malawi 2007
Duration: 2007-2015 Budget: 4.100.000 Flanders works together with the Government of Malawi and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations) around an integrated programme for the promotion of food and nutrition security. Duration and budget After the start in 2007, an interim evaluation was carried out in April 2010. This evaluation was overall positive. As a result, the second phase could start in August. For this second phase the Government of Flanders earmarked an amount of 4.1 million euros.
