Nutrition and food security (MDG 1) take centre stage in Flemish development cooperation and feature in the cooperation with the partner countries Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa. Hunger and poverty continue to pose serious problems in several African countries.

Duration: 2013-2015 Budget: 650.000 euro In 2009, the Government of Flanders already contributed to this organisation in the framework of a programme about capacity building among agricultural extension workers. Capacity building of the Natural Resources College (NRC) Malawi 2013
Duration: 2013-2015 Budget: 600.000 euro The Government of Flanders decided to allocate a contribution to the Natural Resources College (NRC) in Malawi. This training institute was already a partner of Flemish development cooperation within the framework of the programme for capacity building among agricultural extension workers. Duration and budget A contribution of 600,000 euros is charged to the 2013 budget. The project will start in the spring of 2013 and will last three years. Problem definition NRC is a public institution.

“Technology for Extension to Smallholders Programme” (ASI) (2012)
Duration: 2012-2014 Budget: 750.000 euro With this pilot project, Agribusiness Systems International (ASI) wants to implement, within the Department of Agricultural Extension Services (DAES), an existing system which disseminates market information by SMS. Duration and budget In 2012, the Government of Flanders decided to contribute to this innovative project, the pilot phase of which will be concluded in 2014. An amount of 750,000 euros was earmarked. Problem definition The agricultural sector is essential for food production in Malawi.

Preventing mother to child HIV transmission
Duration: 2012-2014 Budget: 260.000 Within the framework of the strategy paper between Flanders and Mozambique this project is situated in the sector of health care and reproductive health. Preventing mother to child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV is one of the priorities of the Mozambique Ministry of Health. Duration and budget An amount of 260,000 euros has been appropriated for this project which ends in 2014. Problem definition Just like other countries in southern Africa, Mozambique has to contend with the consequences of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Grant for a baseline study on first aid activities in Southern Africa, 2013
Partner: Belgian Red Cross - Flanders Duration: 2013-2014 Budget: 147.840 euro The Belgian Red Cross - Flanders intends to strengthen the first aid activities of 10 national committees in southern Africa (Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe) via the International Red Cross. In order to bring this to a successful end, however, the idea is to carry out a baseline study first. For this purpose, the needs, legislative frameworks, policy plans and ongoing activities of each of the different countries will be recorded.

Project: Structural support for Humanitarian aid in Malawi Beneficiary: Malawi Humanitarian Emergency Response Fund Amount: 479.000 euro Duration: 2016 - 2018 The Government has awarded a grant of 479,000 euros to the Malawi Humanitarian Emergency Response Fund for the period 2016-2018. This fund, administered by the UN, ensures that funds are available at the onset of a humanitarian crisis. Flanders is a co-founder of the fund and was the first donor in 2012.

Grant for emergency aid refugees of Mosul 2016
Project: Emergency aid for the refugees of Mosul, Iraq) Beneficiary: UNHCR Amount: 350.000 euro Duration: november 2016 The Government of Flanders approved a grant of 350,000 euros to UNHCR for the refugees from Mosul. Mosul is the third largest city in Iraq and located just across the border of the Kurdish Autonomous Region in Iraq. Since 2014, Mosul is controlled by Islamic State (IS). The Kurdish population but also a significant Christian minority in the city were largely persecuted and expelled.

This platform consolidates the results of previous projects funded by Flanders.

Project: Grant to the African Climate Change Fund Beneficiary: African climate Change fund period: 2017-2018 Amount: 2.000.000 euro According a study by Climate Policy Initiative in 2013-2014, only 3% of global climate funding went to Sub Saharan Africa. This contrasts with the finding that Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the lowest contribution to climate change, but with the highest vulnerability to climate change impacts. It is known that these countries find it more difficult to raise climate finance.

Commemoration 'Battle of Messines' (2017)
Project: Commemoration Battle of Messines Beneficiary: City Messines Amount: 60.000 euros Duration: June 7, 2017 On Wednesday, June 7, 2017 it will be exactly 100 years ago that 19 mines exploded under the German positions and thus heralded the start of the infamous Battle of Messines. The explosions resulted in gigantic craters, which are still visible in Messines, Ypres and Heuvelland. Several monuments and cemeteries in the region refer to this historical battle. 100 years later, these historical events are commemorated internationally.

Project: Commemorating 100 years Battle of Messines Beneficiary: Municipality Heuvelland Amount: 49.775 euro Duration: June 10, 2017 During the Battle on June 7, 1917 the British army left 19 mines explode under the ridge around and around Mesen / Wijtschate. The Second Battle of Messines went down in history as the worst military explosion until the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and changed the landscape around Heuvelland and Messines final.
