Record number 'Neuerscheinungen' for Flanders and the Netherlands
In the run-up to the Frankfurter Buchmesse already 454 Neuerscheinungen, i.e. newly published books, appeared. These are German translations from Dutch as well as German books about the Netherlands and Flanders.
Most of these are literary translations. Striking is that all genres (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, theater, children's literature, comics and graphic novels) are represented. Never before did the Buchmesse see a host get so many translations before the book fair even started.
The number of translations from Dutch into other languages is expected to rise, as was the case for previous hosts. For Dutch literature Germany is not only the main export area, but it also acts as a lever for other language areas. Now is the time to capitalize on this great interest in Germany by tapping into new language areas.
Minister Sven Gatz: "The huge success of German translations even before the Buchmesse 2016 has started, proves just how useful Flanders and the Netherlands' commitment to an intensive cultural cooperation is."
From 19 to 23 October Flanders and the Netherlands are the guests of honor at the Frankfurter Buchmesse, the biggest and most influential international book fair in the world.
