The Russian Federation is the largest country in the world and covers a substantial part of Europe and Asia. As the Soviet Union it was one of the victorious Allies after the Second World War, and afterwards one of the two superpowers in the post-war period. The country went through a difficult transition after the fall of communism, but was able to ascend into an economic global player.
In 2015, Flanders and Russia signed a new work programme. The country remains an important economic partner for Flanders despite the economic sanctions, especially in the field of diamond trade. Flanders has economic representatives in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod and St. Petersburg.
