Syrian journalists meet European counterparts
On January 29th, the department met a delegation of Syrian journalists. The delegation, accompanied by the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD), came to Brussels for a work visit. Since 2013, GFMD facilitates the coordination of media assistance in Syria with the financial support of the European Commission, UNESCO, International Media Support and Free Press Unlimited.
In the morning the delegation met representatives from various European institutions such as the Directorate General for Development Cooperation and the European External Action Service. In the afternoon meetings with the NGO Endowment for Democracy and the international, European and Belgian federations for journalists followed. Finally, the Syrian journalists had the opportunity to exchange views with their European colleagues on topics like the importance of independent Syrian media and their working conditions and the flow of Syrian news reports to European media.
The Flanders Department of Foreign Affairs supports GFMD in its work for independent Syrian media as they are the first and foremost condition for creating a successful environment for rebuilding a viable democracy in Syria.
