Project: Partnerships for empowered entrepreneurs representation Partner: Trias vzw Budget: €1.000.000 Duration: 01.01.2016 – 31.12.2018 The project aims to help fight poverty and improve living conditions in South Africa by increasing the chances of success of SMEs in the townships.

Project: Building a policy framework for social economy in South Africa Partner: Economic Development Department of South Africa and the International Labour Organisation Budget: 1.324.367 euro Duration: 2017-2020 Flanders supports the Economic Development Department of South Africa in the development of a policy framework for social economy. The sector is developing fast in South Africa. It is an economy that offers innovative solutions to social challenges and aims for an inclusive, sustainable and social society.

Project: An education and training programme is set up to bring improvements in the nutrition (health) sector. Beneficiary: Danish Development Cooperation Duration: 2011-2012 Amount: 1.000.000 euro Chronic malnutrition still is a major concern in Mozambique.

Project: Technical and Management Support Project  Partner: Government of South Africa - National Treasury Budget: 2.000.000 euro Duration: 01.02.2012 – 31.12.2016 (extended till 30.06.2017) With this project the National Treasury of South Africa will offer additional support to the official development programme between Flanders and South Africa. This programme has been laid down in the Country Strategy Paper 2012-2016. Both governments agreed to focus on two sectors, i.e.

Project: SA Land Observatory, a platform for supporting evidence-based and participatory decision making on land in South Africa Partner: University of Pretoria Budget: 406.450 euro Duration: 01.10.2014 – 31.09.2017 In 1994 South Africa introduced far-reaching and fundamental land and agricultural reforms. After twenty years the time has come to draw lessons from this. However, the country has insufficient data and analyses at its disposal, which in addition are not or hardly available.

Project: Support for the expension of the IDC Social Enterprise Fund Duration: 01.04.2014 – 31.03.2016 (extended till 31.03.2018) Budget: 4.000.000 euro With this grant Flanders develops the Industrial Development Corporation Social Enterprise Fund. Through this fund environment-friendly companies are supported which have a large social impact on local communities. It primarily deals with the issue of high unemployment. Only 40% of the active working population has a job (OECD, March 2013). Also, 51% of the young people are unemployed, which is even more alarming.

Project: ‘Strengthening Farmer Organisations and Rural Structured Trade Mechanisms in Malawi’ Beneficiary: World Food Programme Duration: 2014-2018 Budget: 2.999.140,62€ The World Food Programme (WFP) and the Agricultural Commodity Exchange for Africa (ACE) join forces to implement this project. In 2009 the WFP launched the Purchase for Progress (P4P) programme to help smallholder farmers and their organisations gain access to the WFP market by linking WFP’s demand for basic food to the supply of smallholder farmers.

Duration: 2014-2015 Budget: 2.000.000€ In the first Country Strategy Paper 2009-2013 between Flanders and Malawi sector budget support was included as the main funding arrangement in the healthcare sector. Therefore, Flanders committed to supporting the national health plan, i.e. the Health Sector Wide Approach 2011–2016 (HSWAp). The Government of Flanders already approved a contribution of EUR 2 million to HSWAp three times, namely for the Malawi financial years 2009/2010, 2010/2011 and 2012/2013.

Project:  improving the access and reach of agricultural extension services for smallholder farmers Beneficiary: Farm Radio Trust Duration: 2014-2019 Budget: 1.045.000 euro The objective of the programme ‘Scaling-up Radio and ICTs in Enhancing Extension Delivery’ (SRIEED) is to improve the access and reach of agricultural extension services for smallholder farmers. For a long time already radio has been internationally acknowledged as an important instrument for agricultural extension.

Project: a reduction in maternal and child mortality figures in Mozambique through the development and/or adapting and testing of new technologies Beneficiary: Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) Duration: 2016-2018 Budget: 780.000 euro The IMNH-MNCH project aims at a reduction in maternal and child mortality figures (i.e. newborns and children under 5 yrs) in Mozambique through the development and/or adapting and testing of new technologies in close cooperation with the government and the manufacturers.

Project: provide humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees and to develop development-oriented activities for them. Beneficiary: UNRWA Duration: 2016-2018 Budget: 150.000 euro On 23 October 2015, the Government of Flanders decided to continue the aid to UNRWA till 2018 with a annually amount of 150,000 euros. Through this support, the Government provides assistance to the affected population in the Palestinian territories and contributes to the post 2015 targets on poverty, food security, health and education.

Project: monitoring management of public finances of the Ministry of Health of Mozambique Beneficiary: BTC Duration: 2015-2016 Budget: 449.966 euro This grant contributes to the realisation of the objectives in the strategy paper Flanders-Mozambique 2011-2015 which focuses on health care. In agreement with the Framework Decree and by extension with the Country Strategy Paper work is done on the transversal theme ‘good governance’ by concentrating on improving governance. Flanders delivers technical expertise through delegated cooperation with BTC.

Project: cooperation agreement UNAIDS beneficiary: UNAIDS Duration: 2015-2018 Budget: 3.000.000 euro Sub sahara Africa remains the region with the highest number of people living with HIV and AIDS (PLHIV). Of the currently 35 million PLHIV, there are 24.7 million (70%!) In this region, while this region houses only 13% of the world's population.  With the cooperation agreement, Flanders will continue to support UNAIDS at level of headquarters and country offices in 8 countries in the SAC region.

Duration: 4 years Budget: 3.500.000 The Government of Flanders focuses on structural measures and works closely with the United Nations Organization for Agriculture and Food (FAO). From 2016 till 2019, FAO will assist Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia to increase the climate resilience and food security of local farmers. Lessons learned from this program will be brought to the FAO global level.

Project: Improve the overall health policy of Mozambique Beneficiary: Mozambican Ministry of Health (MISAU) Duration: 2015 Budget: 1,971,086 euros On July 30, 2008, the Mozambican Government and a group of 19 donors, including Flanders, signed the Memorandum of Understanding regarding PROSAUDE II. This will create a single financing mechanism (sector fund) for the financial contributions of international donors to the health sector and assistance in the form of general budget support.

Project: work for change beneficiary: Zuiddag Duration: 2015 Budget: 45.000 euro 'Work for Change' means one working day for Flemish and Brussels school pupils between 15 and 20 years. The money they earn - 40 to 50 euros - they donate to a youth project in the South. Zuiddag stimulates young people to develop an active engagement, now and later. 

Project: food aid for Syrian refugees Beneficiary: World Food Programme Duration: 2014 Budget: 110.000 euro 3 million Syrian refugees are registered in neighboring Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey. The World Food programme helps these refugess through a system of food credits (electronic coupons) so they can buy local food.

Duration: 2015 Budget: 150.000 euro the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) offers the refugees education, health care, shelter, microfinancing and first aid, especially in war times.

Project: Partnerships for empowered entrepreneurs representation in South Africa Partner: Trias vzw Budget: 900.000 euro Duration: 24.12.2012 – 23.12.2015 Despite its improving economy, South Africa is still having difficulty in creating jobs. The South African Government has made a clear choice to invest strongly in employment and is looking at the private sector, among others, for support. The large companies and the public sector alone do not succeed in providing an answer to the growing unemployment.

Duration: 2015-2016 Budget: 600.000 euro The CERF provides support in a timely and reliable manner to the victims of armed conflicts and natural disasters. The Government of Flanders is a modest donor, but by contributing to the CERF she endorses to various principles of Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD).
