World Premiere of “Die Fremden” on Ruhrtriennale

  • September 9, 2016

Minister of Culture Sven Gatz and German Bundespresident Joachim Gauck attended the world premiere of "Die Fremden"  (The Strangers) of the National Theater of Ghent during the Ruhrtriennale. The minister visited this unique performing arts festival in North Rhine-Westphalia from 2 to 4 September.

The Ruhrtriennale was founded in 2002 with Gerard Mortier as its first intendant. Every three years it changes  artistic direction, hence the name triennale. For the editions 2015 to 2017, the Dutchman Johan Simons is in charge. Simons - also artistic director of NTGent – chose strong Flemish influences for the stages. This edition showcasts performances of Les Ballets C de la B, Rosas, Collegium Vocale, Damaged Goods, Bl! NDMAN, Transparent, Eleanor Bauer and Ictus, B'Rock, Ivo Van Hove, Luk Perceval and Studio Orka.

A strong international presence of our companies and artists, such as earlier this year in Edinburgh and Avignon, is one of the priorities of Minister Gatz. "By attending the Ruhrtriennale, I want to emphasize this policy choice and give artists from Flanders and Brussels an extra push."
